Founded by Dave Churchward in late 2014, Little Acorns Forest Schools Ltd began with a car boot full of kit and a passion for outdoor learning. After returning from Germany, Dave launched Stay and Play sessions for pre-schoolers at Moira Furnace—booked through Facebook messages and word of mouth. From those humble beginnings, we’ve grown into a thriving organisation rooted in child-led, nature-based learning.
Today, Little Acorns delivers a wide range of Forest School programmes across 3 permanent sites and beyond.
Weekly sessions for ages 5–11 (Acorns) and 12–16 (Oaks), offering long-term Forest School experiences in a supportive, nature-based setting. As part of our alternative provision, these sessions nurture confidence, independence, and community for learners outside mainstream education.
Gentle, sensory-rich sessions for babies and their grown-ups—including parents, carers, and grandparents. A perfect introduction to the natural world.
Weekly term-time sessions for toddlers, encouraging exploration, creativity, and connection through outdoor play.
During school breaks, we run:
Family Acorns is our monthly session designed for all generations to enjoy the forest together. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, carer, or curious little explorer, these relaxed sessions offer a chance to connect through nature-based play, crafts, storytelling, and campfire treats. It’s a joyful way to spend quality time outdoors, build memories, and share the magic of the forest—together.
We deliver long-term Forest School programmes that are fully embedded into the school curriculum—supporting learners of all ages and abilities. Our sessions are designed to enrich classroom learning through hands-on, outdoor experiences that promote confidence, creativity, and well-being. Whether it’s Early Years exploration or curriculum-linked projects for older pupils, we work closely with schools to tailor each programme to their unique needs and goals.
We also offer woodland management plans to help schools develop, maintain, and make the most of their outdoor spaces. Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to enhance an existing site, our experienced team can create a tailored plan that supports biodiversity, safety, and long-term sustainability—ensuring your Forest School area thrives for years to come.
From baby-friendly play sessions to fire-making and tool use for older children—and even adults (our oldest party guest so far was 40!)—we create unforgettable woodland celebrations.
Bespoke outdoor experiences focused on leadership, mindfulness, and team-building—ideal for schools and organisations looking to reconnect and recharge.
We offer accredited Level 1 to Level 3 Leader courses delivered across the UK and internationally—empowering educators to lead inspiring, child-centred outdoor learning.
